A Message from Jim Harstad

This is a message to all Lab School graduates from Jim Harstad, retired Lab School English Department head and teacher, and from Dan Bent, co-founder with Jim and Peter Glick of the successful after school STEM reading program ReaDch. Because you have experienced the Lab School’s read-aloud/read-along reading program if you attended there in the past 30 years, we seek your help.

We are looking for a “good home” at no cost for classroom sets of valuable books on STEM topics in order to stimulate student interest in science and medicine. Doing so we may save lives in future pandemics.

Specifically, we are looking for one or more school principals, teachers, libraries, or youth programs  that have adopted or are interested in adopting at one or more K-12 grade levels the Lab School’s remarkably successful “read aloud/read-along” classroom format in its English program.

From his more than twenty-five years of teaching, Jim knows that every student can be reading at grade level by 12th-grade through the read aloud-read-along format.

The titles we are offering have been read and approved by Jim Harstad as a good STEM-focused read-aloud suitable for use in English, social studies, or science, in classrooms, or programs, or special reading programs from elementary through secondary grades. The titles are selected to excite an interest in math, science, medicine and technology while improving reading skills.

The classroom sets include titles such as: A Day in the Life of a Doctor, An American Plague, The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793, Germ Hunter: A Story About Louis Pasteur, Hidden Worlds: Looking Through A  Scientist’s Microscope and others primarily selected to excite an interest in STEM.

We can give free of charge one or more titles now or after the end of the pandemic. The list of available titles include those listed below. Please pass this on to any others who may be interested in such donated books.

If you or someone you know may be interested in one or more sets of these books, contact Dan Bent, 548-0080 or danbent@fairmediation.com (with a copy to Jim at harstadj@hawaii.edu). Please feel free to pass this invitation to others.
