SandBows beat No. 1 UCLA on Opening Day

The No. 16 Hawaii beach volleyball team, under first-year coach Danny Alvarez, beat No. 1 UCLA 3-2 on Thursday at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen’s Beach, Waikiki.
The SandBows’ Julia Lawrenz/Izadora Stedile at No. 2, Julia Thelle/Sophie Buschmann at No. 3 and Kristen Serrano/Kiera Cornman at No. 5 won matches against the Bruins.
Serrano/Cornman clinched the victory with a 21-16, 15-21, 15-13 victory over Hannah Fleming/Mallory LaBreche.
In UH’s season opener earlier in the day, No. 6 Texas edged Hawaii 3-2.
Lawrenz/Stedile at No. 2 and Emily Heintzelman/Sydney Miller at No. 4 won for the SandBows.
