Don’t Miss Scales: One Night Only!

Hawai’i Opera Theatre’s Education Department is once again partnering with the Hawai’i Youth Opera Chorus in its 31st annual summer youth opera program, OPERAtunities. Students grades 5 through 12 are preparing an opera production featuring ‘ohana scenes from HYOC’s newest commission “Scales,” based on an original story about Mo`o (Dragons) on Maui by Native Hawaiian author, Acacia Awai, and composed by HYOC’s own Alum, Dr. Tonia Ko, DMA in composition and professor of music at Royal Holloway at the University of London.

HYOC has traditionally commissioned local authors and composers to compose operas specifically for youth performers. Come hear Hawaiian legends and stories and be charmed by our talented youthful performers.

This summer’s program is focusing on the “Ohana,” a.k.a. Chorus scenes of our newest opera, as well as paying tribute to Lahaina, Maui.

This program aims to help develop the performance skills of our students. The students also create many of their own props and costume pieces. Join us for the culmination of a 3 week intensive experience!
