Update: Daryl Mann ’73

Update: Daryl’s funeral will be Jan 26 at 1 pm, Nuuanu Memorial Park.

For those of you who know Daryl, his niece Marissa ’10, daughter of Daryl’s brother Kevin ’72, asked me to post this link below about Daryl’s passing.

I wrote to my class — I’m in Kevin’s class — that my favorite memory of Daryl came when we were playing flag football against Maryknoll. Probably their fastest player, C.J. ( I forget his last name) intercepted a pass. He was tearing down the side line and would have scored, he wished, except that Daryl, who was very fast as well, ran him down at about the three-yard line. C.J.’s coach, Tony Sellitto (if you know him you’ll know what I mean) started yelling at him in full-on Sellitto form about how slow he was. He said something like, “What’s matter with you, C.J? Are you a turtle?” It was a scary Sellitto moment — one of his many.

I mentioned this to Sellitto when I was having a few with him at a bar in the Ala Moana shopping center. He laughed and said, “C.J.’s my dentist now.”

I tell you, watching Daryl chase him down was spectacular. Daryl could also shoot the three before there was a three. He was an excellent basketball player.

Rest in peace, Daryl.
