Ernest Chang ’57

ERNEST Q.C. CHANG: Acclaimed pianist and piano teacher, Ernest Chang, born May 18, 1939, in Honolulu, passed peacefully April 9, 2023. Ernie attended University High School, and at the age of 18, received a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music where he graduated with honors. Upon returning home, he performed with the Honolulu Symphony as a soloist. Ernest Chang Piano Studio would have celebrated its sixtieth anniversary this September. Many of Ernie’s students also followed in his footsteps and were proudly accepted into Juilliard. Ernie’s joy was being actively involved in the Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club where he served as past president and district governor. Preceded in death by daughter Colette Anders, he is survived by wife Mary; children Carleen (Herbert) Saito, and Curran (Cindy); eight grandchildren, and brothers Norman (Ruby) and Malcom (Lisa). A Celebration of Life recital will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Central Union Church.
