Sophomore Kian Sanchez placed first at the Honolulu District Science and Engineering Fair (HonSEF) in February to earn his spot as an International Science and Engineering Fair Finalist, the first ever for ULS.
The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the most prestigious international science fair for high school students. To qualify, as Kian did, you need to earn your spot at an ISEF-affiliated local or state level fair.
There were 24 projects from Hawai’i in a field of over 1,600 projects from 64 countries. Kian is a member of the Science Research elective class which had eight students this year, under the direction of Jr. Bow alumna science teacher Jenny Seki-Wong ’96. All eight competed at HonSEF where they won various awards, and five earned spots to compete at States (HSSEF). At States there were more awards.
At the International competition, Kian earned a 3rd place medal in his category.
